LEE714C - WIT - Supply of a Benchtop Scanning Electron Microscope

Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) is seeking to purchase a benchtop scanning electron microscope to support research and industry engagement at the Pharmaceutical and Molecular Biotechnology Research Centre (PMBRC) at WIT. A benchtop scanning electron microscope with a low equipment footprint, capable of high resolution magnifications of at least 100k X. Capable of holding samples of at least 25 mm in size. The SEM must include an Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometer (EDS or EDX) analysis capability for elemental mapping. The SEM system should be flexible and allow for purchase of additional functionality (hardware and software) at a later date to keep up-to-date with developments in the field. Some potential applications include: • Examining particle morphology and shape • Examining surface features • Supporting laser diffraction particle sizing method development work • Imaging and Identification of contaminants (e.g. spots on a tablet) • Measuring sample elemental composition and mapping elemental distribution • Supporting education and outreach activities • Samples to be tested would include powders, thin films, microneedle arrays, solid dosage forms (e.g. tablets) and drug-coated substrates (e.g. stents or catheters).
