GLA MOORINGS FRAMEWORK - GLA MOORINGS FRAMEWORK

The General Lighthouse Authorities for the United Kingdom and Ireland (hereafter referred to as the GLAs) are the organisations responsible for the superintendence and management of Aids to Marine Navigation around the coastline of the UK and Republic of Ireland including the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and their adjacent seas and islands. The organisations are the Corporation of Trinity House (TH), Commissioners of Northern Lighthouses, operating as the Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB) and the Commissioners of Irish Lights (Irish Lights). In support of their fleets of floating Aids-to-Navigation (AtoNs) and their ongoing statutory duties, the General Lighthouse Authorities for the United Kingdom and Ireland (the GLAs) are each users of significant quantities of mooring equipment, including: • Open Link and Stud Link Chain Cable; • Bridles, including associated swivels and links; • Shackles, including Forelock, Bow, Kenter and Joining types; • Grey Iron Sinkers/Anchors. The majority of mooring components will be used in the deployment of navigational buoyage. Navigational buoys serve as markers for navigation in many of the channels, coastal regions and seaways of the United Kingdom and Ireland. These Aids-to-Navigation are serviced for four separate locations: • Harwich, Essex - Trinity House; • Swansea, South Wales – Trinity House; • Oban, Western Scotland – Northern Lighthouse Board; • Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin – Commissioners of Irish Lights. The approximate numbers of buoys currently under the control of the GLAs are as follows: Trinity House 412 Northern Lighthouse Board 196 Commissioners of Irish Lights 150
