16/220 - Supply of Stainless Steel (Parker) Fittings

GNI requires a supply stainless steel fittings for day to day maintenance, upgrade and refurbishment of gas installations as part of the operation of its network. Such fittings to meet the following minimum requirements: (a) stainless steel fittings which have the same locking mechanism (glands) as the existing fittings used for GNI’s network, and; (b) 100% compatibility with existing Parker stainless steel fittings to avoid uncontrolled escapes of gas in confined and restricted spaces and enclosures resulting in risk to personnel safety, means of egress, system interruption, over- pressurisation, outages and security of supply, and; (c) 100% compatible Parker stainless steel fittings used on safety critical equipment. GNI considers that it would not be technically possible to ensure new alternative stainless steel fittings installed during day to day maintenance, upgrade and refurbishment at existing GNI network installations would be 100% compatible with the existing network fittings. Introducing non-compatible products may: • lead to uncontrolled escapes of gas in confined and restricted spaces or enclosures that risk personnel safety and means of egress; • will introduce faults and increased risk of outages and to the safe operation of the network; to avoid uncontrolled leaks or system interruption and outages. • Control system failures could lead to over-pressurisation of the downstream network affecting the integrity of associated pipework, customer systems and appliances • Modifying or replacing pipework would require significant redesign and engineering leading to system or operation risks; For the reasons outlined above, Gas Networks Ireland wishes to purchase Parker fittings for technical reasons.
