[DescrProcurement]

The proposed programme will focus on engaging with young people who are about to start driving. The programme will be on hands on experience of working with cars. Understanding the design functions of each part of the car, diagnosing and fixing minor faults, minor panel beating and car detailing (advanced car valeting) will form part of the activities. The emphasis of all of the activities will be on promoting emotional control, social responsibility and a greater awareness of the impacts of their behaviour on the wider community. The structure of the programme is as follows: Technical skills: participants will work together in teams to complete specified tasks relating to the safe maintenance of cars. Participants will attend workshops on topics such as emotional control, social awareness, team building, personal development and job planning. The underpinning rationale is that the programme will build on the participants’ interest in cars and driving to give them a wider perspective on the dangers and the potential of driving. The objective of the programme is to target young people, boys and girls, who are a danger to themselves and their communities through their driving behaviour. Traditional approaches to road safety rely on the recipient being in a passive mode and tend not to engage. This programme intends to engage with the young people and rather than alienate them because of their interest in driving and all things motoring, to involve them in enriching their hobbies to the next level. Participants will have talks on pursuing careers in the motor industry and the importance of mainstream education in this.
