Inpatient Ward Redevelopment Project at Nenagh Hospital, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, UL Hospitals Group

The project proposes the refurbishment of the existing medical ward (circa 400sq m) and its extension (circa 840sq m) via a new build single storey building. The proposed development provides for the delivery of an integrated twenty-four (24) bed ward facility achieved through provision of sixteen (16) new single bed rooms and four (4) no. refurbished twin bed rooms. Horizontal connection to the existing hospital and vertical cores will be via existing ward circulation. The extension is proposed as a single storey L shaped block. The new extension block will accommodate a full isolation room suite along with a series of single rooms along a single loaded corridor to the elbow of the new block whereupon the single rooms will return either side of the southerly leg of the block divided by an island of internal ancillary rooms such as treatment room, equipment store, clean utility and dirty utility. A nurse base will locate at the end of this island of rooms at the junction of the new block corridor routes. The existing ward area will be subject to demolition and reconfiguration works to accommodate a number of ancillary ward facilities including ward kitchen, assisted bathroom, doctor’s office, nurse base staff facilities etc along with four twin bedrooms. The works will also include all necessary works to facilitate the new extension including external works such as external courtyard area, rerouting of the campus ring road, new drop off point at the lift core block etc. The development is proposed to be carried out in two distinct phases so that the existing ward remains operational throughout the construction of the new sixteen bed extension and interface works which will enable this extension to be operational via decanting from the existing ward to facilitate the phase two works consisting of the refurbishment of the existing space. The project will need to reconcile construction activities in very close proximity to existing live hospital
