Met Éireann, Ireland’s National Meteorological Service, plans to issue a Request for Tenders for the replacement of its satellite data reception and handling system. It currently receives satellite meteorology data from the EUMETCast Satellite dissemination service using an antenna-based reception system at its headquarters in Dublin. The primary aim of the procurement is to obtain a system with capacity to handle the higher data rates and new data types from next-generation weather satellites launching over the next 5 years. Met Éireann also looks to increase redundancy in its satellite data supply by additionally establishing connections to the EUMETCast Terrestrial service at both its headquarters and a second data centre in Dublin.
The supplier of the new system would be required to:
-Provide consultation on required hardware and software upgrades for reception and processing of EUMETCast data;
-Provide components of the new system, including two antenna dishes, DVB units, and required reception and processing servers. It is envisaged that some/all of these servers may be virtualised or cloud-based;
-Perform replacement/installation of required hardware for new system;
-Provide and install the required software for the handling of satellite data on the reception and processing servers;
-Prepare, test and commission the system to receive and process data from both EUMETCast dissemination services;
-Ensure processed data outputted by the system is compatible with Met Éireann’s visualisation system;
-Provide update and maintenance service options for the new system once operational.
With an increase in satellite data rates expected by Q4 2023, the capacity of the supplier to perform the replacement of the system within a short time frame will be an important element.
