It provides a comprehensive test repertoire and pathology service to St. James’s hospital and its clinical users, as well as to many external institutions, General Practitioners, Dentists and other hospitals nationwide. The LabMed Histopathology laboratory offers several excellent diagnostic facilities including automated immunohistochemistry (IHC), FISH, flow cytometry and molecular diagnostics. The department has a staffing compliment of 1 chief medical scientist, 16 medical scientists, 2 technicians, 6 medical laboratory aids with 14consultants plus 10 NCHDs.
This business case proposes the procurement and implementation of a Digital Pathology system across St James’s hospital campus to digitalize the business processes in Histopathology and to streamline the pathologists review and assessment of patient slides for diagnostic purposes replacing the current practice of use of light microscopy. The project proposes the introduction of Whole Slide Imaging (WSI) in the Histopathology and Cancer Molecular Diagnostics (CMD) laboratories at St. James’s hospital but also for our on-campus partners and for external hospitals accessing our pathology services. The implementation of Digital Pathology will revolutionize this highly manual and labor intensive discipline and significantly improve patient services quality assurance, productivity, and turnaround times for analysis as well as provide long-term data sto
