Short description

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service tests approx 140,000 donations per annum in our Donor Grouping, NAT and Virology laboratories. The SNBTS (Edinburgh) currently provide a contingency back up service for the IBTS which is tested four times per annum. Occasionally frozen samples will require to be shipped to England, Scotland or The Netherlands.
The IBTS on occasion imports blood components from other blood transfusion services to meet the needs of patients with rare blood types. This process is managed by the IBTS medical team and the Red Cell Immunohaematology Laboratory. These rare blood units must be transported under appropriate temperature and environmental conditions in a timely manner.
