Short description

In 2011, Bord Na Móna plc published a ‘Strategic Framework for the Future Use of Peatlands’, which reviews and assesses the land bank resource, identifies key issues and considers options for future land-use. This strategy recognises that cutaway peatlands have significant potential for the development of wind energy.
Bord na Móna Plc and specifically Bord na Móna Powergen Ltd. have completed a high-level site selection study examining the potential for developing cutaway peat land for the purposes of Wind Energy production. Arising from the site selection process a number of areas have been selected for further investigation and will require ongoing baseline surveys for breeding and winter birds. These surveys will subsequently act as baseline data for any future Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR) for potential development of the bogs identified.
