The mountain-bike trail network when completed will comprise of more than 100kms of trails in the Slieve Bloom Mountains and was granted planning permission by Laois and Offaly County Councils in March 2017. It is centred on two trailheads, one near/ in Kinnitty village in Co. Offaly and one in the heart of the Baunreagh valley, Co. Laois.
The first phase (to which this PQQ and subsequent tender applies) will design and build approximately 27kms of singletrack non-bitmac mountain bike trails and these will link with a further 8kms of existing forest roads to provide a total of 35kms of trail network. The first phase will build trails centred at both trailheads and both will be connected via the public road over the county boundary. The first phase will also include the construction of rural public road crossings, a footbridge, hard standing for car-parking and installation of signage and waymarking.
The macro-design carried out to date for the trail network has identified suitable trail corridors for each trail section, within which the definitive trail line will be designed and built. The corridors are up to a maximum of 100m width and the trail construction zone will be a maximum of 5m width within that corridor. The finished trail surface will be no more than 600mm width within that trail construction zone (unless otherwise specified).
