The Irish Blood Transfusion Service tests approximately 145,000 donations per annum. One of the criteria required for the issue of a blood component is the collection and long term storage of a

IBTS policy dictates that approximately 9 months of frozen archive material is
retained on-site (average temperature of -30̊C; range = -20̊C to -40̊C) before
shipping to an off-site facility for secure storage under temperature controlled
conditions. All IBTS archive material will have undergone routine viral screening in
effect at the time of donation. Certain IBTS archive samples will be classified as
infectious biological materials and all relevant archive boxes/containers containing
such infectious biological materials will be clearly labelled.
