Short description of the contract or purchase(s)

This particular project is located within Dublin Airport (airside) which opened to

operations in 1941. In 1950, annual passenger traffic was recorded at 212,661

persons with 16,769 air transport movements. By 2008, passenger numbers had

risen to some 23.5 million (passengers) with more than 210,000 commercial air

transport movements. During 2008-2012 these numbers reduced, however Dublin

Airport has enjoyed steady growth since then and in 2014 there were 21.7 million

    passengers.

The airport has progressively developed from being a small facility into a major

international air transport node of vital economic importance. Dublin Airport

operates on a 24-hour basis, supporting scheduled and chartered services to over

150 destinations. The airport provides/facilitates all ancillary services associated

with an international airport. These include retail, food and beverage, long and

short-term car parking, public transportation, hotels, offices, catering, aircraft

maintenance facilities, cargo facilities and other associated services.

Runway 10/28 is Dublin Airport‘s primary runway as it currently deals with 95% of

all air traffic movements. Originally constructed in 1989 as a rigid Pavement

Quality Concrete (PQC) it was overlaid in 2010 with a Thin Porous Friction Course

(TPFC) to provide improved friction. The TPFC installed in 2010 had a design life

0f 6-8 years before rehabilitation is required. Recent studies have determined that

the runway does not have sufficient structural strength for the projected aircraft

movements over the next 15-20 years and a rehabilitation of the pavement is

    required.
