    IÉ has a requirement to undertake planned overhaul work and casualty repair on these engines.

    A high quality fixed price all inclusive overhaul and repair is required that builds on current reliability levels and improves where possible. Technical innovation and product enhancement is encouraged and high level warranty support between overhaul events is essential.

    Engines will be overhauled to an agreed programme. Installation and removal on the vehicle is excluded.

    The engine & Gensets types are as follows;

    Traction engine

    Class 2600, 2800: Cummins NTA 855-R1, 4 stroke turbo-charged, capacity 14 litres, 350 BHP. An engine mounted compressor is fitted to all types.

    Class 29000: MAN D2876 LUH, 4 stroke turbo-charged and intercooled, capacity 12 litres, 294kW (400 BHP), Euro 2 Emissions

    DMU generator engine

    Cummins 6B5.9GR, 4 stroke naturally aspirated and developing approx. 75 BHP. Small variations exist around peripheral equipment e.g. water pumps.

    DMU generator alternators

    The alternators fitted to the Cummins 6B5.9GR generator engines are as follows:

    Class 2600 Alternator: Nishinon 3-phase generator

    Class 2800 Alternator: Nishinon 3-phase alternator

    Class 29000 Alternator: Letag 3-phase alternator

    All Alternators have common outputs of 230v AC single phase & 400V AC 3 phase at 50 Hz. There is also a 24vDC electrical supply on the vehicles for battery charging and to supply emergency equipment e.g. lighting.

    On board diesel power generation for Locomotive Push-Pull Coaching Stock

    Irish Rail operates a fleet of Mk4 passenger trains which are hauled and/or propelled by a Locomotive. The Locomotive provides power for traction only and the electrical power supply for the coaches (Hotel Power) is generated separately using on-board Diesel Generator sets. The details are as follows:

    Mk4 Control Car

    The vehicle is equipped with two diesel generator sets. The engine used is a turbo-charged 430BHP four-stroke V8, engine model NO. 2848 LE202 and is manufactured by MAN. This is mechanically coupled to a 330kW 3 phase AC alternator manufactured by LETAG. The Gen-set operates at 1500rpm.
