SPU C023-2015 - Pine Marten Population

The pine marten is listed on Annex V of the EU Habitats Directive [92/43/EEC]. This listing requires Ireland to undertake surveillance of the species (as per Article 11 of the Directive) and to submit regular reports on its conservation status (Article 17). The most recent conservation assessment for the pine marten under Article 17 of the Habitats Directive was conducted in 2013. The detailed assessment is contained here: http://www.npws.ie/publications/search? title=article+17. Due to the signs of recovery and the evidence of range expansion, the pine marten was considered to be in favourable conservation status. Nonetheless, the Article 17 assessment recognised that the recent range expansion of the species was bringing it once more into conflict with game keepers, gun clubs and homeowners. Given the reliance of the species on forest habitats, the conservation assessment also highlighted the potential for forestry practises to impact on pine martens. (Refer to rft)
