The works will require the construction of a new footbridge over the live railway and Royal Canal to the east and adjacent to the existing North Strand Road bridge at the junction with Ossory Road in Dublin. The main structure comprises a single span steel box through girder (Approx span 32m) spanning the railway and canal adjacent the protected Newcomen Bridge (3 span gothic arch) and the adjacent 2 span railway bridge. At the southern end a 3 span steel approach structure is to be provided that will provide the tie in and landing to North Strand Road on the southern side of the canal (overall length approx 20m). The single span structure is supported on the existing masonry retaining wall at the north end that provides the boundary between Ossory Road and the railway. At the southern end it is proposed to provide a new reinforced concrete end support which may be piled. The three span approach structure will be supported on reinforced concrete piers which may be piled. The existing bridges, retaining walls and boundary walls have significant architectural heritage value and it is a requirement that these elements will be rehabilitated in a sympathetic manner in accordance with the requirements of Dublin City Council's (DCC) Conservation Officer as part of the works. Works will also include; services diversions, protection of existing services, works on, adjacent to and over the live railway. Works on, adjacent to and over the Royal Canal. Works on and adjacent to the live carriageway in an urban site, traffic management, earthworks, insitu concrete construction, fabrication and erection of steelwork. On the south side of the Canal the area required for construction of the works is contaminated with the invasive species Japanese Knotweed – Fallopia Japonica. The successful Contractor will be required to establish an environmental operating plan in accordance with the requirements of EC (Birds and Natural Habitats) Regulations 2011.
