Con/0054/2014 - North Accomodation Block: Conservation of Feature External Brick Walls and Timber Sash Windows at McKee Barracks, Dublin 7

The North Accommodation Block is part of the 19th century complex of Barracks Buildings, which are listed as protected structures on Dublin City Council List of Protected Structures - RPS No. 768. The building is part 2 storey and part 3 storey with a basement structure at one end. Part of the 3rd storey and a 4th storey of accommodation is in the roof space. The overall floor area of the building is C. 3,500 m². The proposed Conservation works comprises; - The repairs and conservation of the existing historic brickwork façade including repointing in lime mortar and the repairs and conservation of the existing timber sash windows and associated glazing. The works will also include the refurbishment of existing historic doors (C. 28 No.) and associated ironmongery. The building is a fine Victorian red brick structure, with cavity wall construction, the standard brick is a well-made red clay brick which has lost its protective fire skin in some areas. A second, softer, ‘red rubber’ brick forms the pilasters, carved brick ornamentation and central tympanum, in addition to framing a series of detailed terracotta panels. Many of these softer brick have suffered physical damage and loss of detail through natural weathering cycles. The work will involve specialist conservation brickwork repairs / replacement to reinstate the standard and ornamental brickwork detail and terracotta panels to their original condition. The fenestration comprises C. 211 No. historic sash windows that must be retained, protected and refurbished using best conservation practices. A number of 12 pane sash windows have been replaced at ground floor with large panes of glass, which is out of character with the overall elevation composition, these will be reinstated in their original form.The overall works will be carried out on a phased basis to facilitate the ongoing use of the building during the works.
