As part of the Bernal Project, UL is establishing a National Pharmaceutical Spray Dryer Capable of handling Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) and also capable of handling poorly water soluble API such as Biopharmaceutics Classification System Class II (BCS II) drugs. This will further enhance the capacity and capabilities of the Solid State Pharmaceutical Cluster (SSPC) in support of the Pharmaceutical Sector in Ireland. Included in this drier will be advanced spray dryer with inert loop for the development of novel pharmaceutical solid dosage formulations. The dryer will comprise of pharmaceutical spray drying equipment with integral inert loop, dehumidifier and high performance cyclones, providing the basis for an advanced academic and pharmaceutical manufacturing capability in Ireland. The state-of- the-art features, which are nationally unique, include the capability to spray dry both highly potent API (OEL 3, 4 and 5) and BCS Class II API to generate amorphous solid dispersions (ASD).
