The Irish Prison Service has a requirement, on an ongoing basis for the provision of a laboratory based drug testing service for its 14 establishments. The Irish Prison Service currently conducts drug testing on persons committed to its care for the following reasons: *Where clinically indicated on committal to custody; *As part of medically generated toxicology testing; *As a result of an order of the Court, either prior to sentencing or prior to sentence reviews; *As part of the ongoing monitoring of offenders in Drug Free Units, on Incentivised Regimes Programmes; and *For reasons of security and maintenance of good order ; The results of tests may be produced in Court. It is therefore imperative that the chain of custody is maintained for each sample submitted for laboratory testing.
