The Programme for Government mandated the creation of a unit within Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) dedicated to working on Ireland’s response to the global climate crisis. The Climate Unit in DFA Development Cooperation and Africa Division (DCAD) was established in October 2020, tasked to devise a strategy to scale up Ireland’s climate finance contribution. While substantial progress has been made over the past decade in increasing our climate support and actions, both the Programme for Government and our international development policy commit Ireland to significantly increase and improve our climate engagement and to effectively ensure that all of our programming considers and addresses the growing climate challenge. To scale up Ireland’s ODA for climate action in line with these commitments, and to strengthen our development and humanitarian assistance to better respond to climate change, organisational changes are required.
