Diabetic RetinaScreen - Diabetic RetinaScreen, the national Diabetic Retinal Screening Programme in Ireland

Diabetic RetinaScreen, the National Diabetic Retinal Screening Programme in Ireland commenced early 2013. The programme offers free regular diabetic retinopathy screening for approximately 180,000 eligible people with diabetes aged 12 years and older. The aim of the national programme is to reduce morbidity in the population through early detection of retinopathy. Early detection and treatment of retinopathy greatly improves health outcomes. The programme invites around 180,000 participants per year for regular digital screening (RDS) or Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) screening, it is likely this will increase to in excess of 200,000 people in the coming years. Since its inception, Diabetic RetinaScreen has provided over half a million eye screening tests. The programme has referred approx. 47,000 participants to hospital for follow up or treatment. To support the delivery of the Diabetic RetinaScreen programme, the HSE wishes to notify the market of its intention to procure a suitably qualified photographic and grading service to deliver retina screening. This is not a call for competition. A Contract Notice will issue in due course to commence the procurement process.
