The Department of Education (DoE) intends to put in place a multi-supplier framework agreement, for the Provision of Broadband and Associated Services to Schools for the Department of Education. The Schools Broadband Access Programme which began in 2005 comprises three elements - local connectivity to schools, a national broadband network and a school’s broadband service desk. The Schools Broadband Network provides centrally managed services for schools including broadband connectivity, security, anti-spam/ anti-virus and content filtering. Broadband connectivity is provided using a range of technologies. A Schools Broadband Service Desk was also established in 2005 and, in relation to schools broadband, provides a single point of contact between schools and the Department of Education, PDST Technology in Education, HEAnet and Service Providers. Under the Schools Broadband Access Programme, the Department of Education (DoE), provides all primary schools and special schools (other than those included in the Post Primary Programme) with broadband connectivity via the National Schools Broadband Network supported by HEAnet. It is necessary to establish a new Framework of providers to ensure continuation of the programme. Providers are required for the provision of local access connectivity to the schools.
