CCC17 (30) - Latoon Creek Bridge Rehabilitation

Latoon Creek Bridge carries the R458 Regional road over the Rhine River which facilitates traffic, cyclists and pedestrians. The bridge is located in a marine environment within designated and protected sites; the Lower River Shannon Special Area of Conservation (002165) and River Shannon and River Fergus Special Protection Area (004077). The existing bridge is three span comprising postensioned, prestressed and reinforced concrete superstructure and reinforced concrete substructure. The end spans are 15.125m and central span is 24.4m of which 12.2m is dropped in type supported on half joints. The deck is 12m wide. The works involves demolition and replacement of the existing bridge deck, alteration and repairs of the substructure and application of protective coatings. The new deck comprises precast prestressed Box beams (end spans) and W beams (central span) supported on elastomeric bearings. The new deck slab shall be reinforced concrete constructed in sequence and waterproofed. The bridge abutments/bankseats which are supported on steel H-piles are to be demolished and replaced with new reinforced concrete bankseats. The heads of the existing piers are to be demolished and replaced with new reinforced pier caps. High containment parapets are to be installed on the bridge plinths with high containment safety fencing system installed on the northern approaches. The new bridge deck shall be finished with raised verges (incorporating services) and SMA pavement. This contract was awarded to L & M Keating Ltd, Kilmihil, Co. Clare
