No 1 Lapps Quay and 16 Parnell Place are Protected Structures ref PS 157. The historic building, which dates from 1842, was for years used by the Cork Savings Bank. It was then part of the Permanent TSB branch network before closing in 2012.The property is now Owned by University College Cork .The feature facade was built with limestone from the Ballinlough quarries and it represents one of the finest limestone buildings of its type in the country.Located on a corner site overlooking the south channel of the River Lee, it occupies a prominent position in the commercial heart of the city and retains many of its original interesting internal and external features.Internally the building comprises of a three storey high former banking hall together with offices and large boardroom while an interconnecting three storey building at 16 Parnell Place provides a further three storeys of office accommodationThe project works contract consists of the demolition of the existing side extensions, the construction of a new extension and the conversion of the former banking building to a third level educational facility. The conversion of the banking hall on the ground floor and boardroom on first floor to function rooms. The works will be carried out in one phase.
