This public procurement competition relates to Supply of a Laser Doppler Anemometry System to the Discipline of Mechanical Engineering, NUI Galway. An important function of the Discipline of Mechanical Engineering is to perform research to support the key research priority areas of the University and Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) in the fields of renewable energy and energy efficiency. Dr Rory Monaghan is a faculty member in the Discipline of Mechanical Engineering at NUI Galway, a Principal Investigator in the NUI Galway Ryan Institute for Marine, Environment and Energy Research, and a Funded Investigator in the SFI-backed Research Centre for Marine and Renewable Energy in Ireland (MaREI). Dr Monaghan has been awarded funding through MaREI to study fluid dynamic phenomena of importance to gas-phase combustion and fluidised bed gasification of biomass-derived fuels. To this end, this tender is for the provision of a one-dimensional (1D) laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) system. The LDA will be used to collect experimental data for the validation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. These simulations will be used to assess technical feasibility of candidate biofuels and conversion technologies.
