Technical Dialogue - Technical Dialogue: Integrated Workflow Management System

University College Dublin National Virus Reference Laboratory (NVRL) is the national centre for diagnostic virology in Ireland. It provides a comprehensive and quality-driven virology service to clinicians in both acute and non-acute settings throughout the country. The laboratory is fully accredited by both the Irish National Accreditation Board (INAB) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). Samples are submitted by the major hospital pathology laboratories within the Health Service Executive (HSE), private hospitals, specialist clinics and general practitioners in Ireland. In addition to screening, the laboratory functions as a confirmatory and reference centre for laboratories performing initial viral investigations. The NVRL processes 283,000 specimens and performs in excess of 740,000 tests per annum. Approximately, 1100 samples arrive throughout the day however; the majority of deliveries are received in the afternoon. The laboratory operates from 8.00am to 6.00pm and offers a 24/7 clinical and technical on-call service. The majority of samples received are blood samples which are investigated using serological methods on immunoassay platforms. The NVRL is seeking a more efficient and cost effective integrated workflow management system incorporating the pre-analytics, analytics and post-analytics processes. In this regard, the NVRL intends to conduct a series of informal discussions with the market regarding potential solutions in this area. The “technical dialogue” process will afford the NVRL a full understanding of the extent to which the market is in a position to provide the required solution and will enable the NVRL to more accurately formulate an overall approach to the project.
