As part of the Bernal Project, UL is establishing a National Pharmaceutical Powder Processing and Analytical laboratory. Powder characterisation is currently unavailable within the laboratory. The purpose of this tender document is to source a powder characterisation instrument which can be used as a general powder tester; mainly to characterise the rheology, or flow properties, of powders. This should be a benchtop instrument and versatile. It is expected to be able to measure powders’ properties such as, flowability, wall friction and bulk density, etc. The powder characterisation instrument is required to analyse pharmaceutical Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) and excipient materials, particulate and bulk properties. Particularly, the instrument should be able to measure dynamic flow properties such as, flowability and consolidation, shear properties such as, wall friction and cohesion, and bulk properties such as, bulk density and compressibility. The need to be able to measure small amounts of material is also desired, as in API development work, only a small amount of material may be available.
