EPAPhytobenthosMonitoring2015 - Rivers Phytobenthos (Macroalgae & Diatom) Monitoring 2015

The Ecological and Monitoring Assessment Unit within the EPA’s Office of Environmental Assessment undertakes biological monitoring of rivers in fulfilment of the needs of the Water Framework Directive monitoring programme (Directive 2000/60/EC). The EPA is seeking technical assistance in undertaking river phytobenthos monitoring and assessment work in 2015 to supplement the EPA’s own monitoring resources. A total of 106 sites from the river monitoring program require phytobenthos assessment which includes sampling macroalgal and diatoms. The EPA require sampling and assessment for phytobenthos to be undertaken at 106 river stations during the period 1st July – 31 August inclusive, during low flow periods. Details of the 106 stations can be found in Appendix 8. All candidate(s) undertaking fieldwork and assessment must complete 1 day training in the assessment methodology before sampling commences.Training will be provided in the Castlebar Inspectorate of the EPA and will enable the contractor to undertake diatom and macroalgal assessment in accordance with EPA procedures. Data input, formatting and record keeping will also be covered. It is expected that the successful contractor and all field staff undertaking sampling will have a high level of technical expertise in biological assessment.
