An assessment of the economic costs of smoking in Ireland

Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in high income countries . One in every two smokers will die of a tobacco related disease. In Ireland this translates into at least 5,200 deaths directly attributable to tobacco use annually . In addition to deaths, tobacco use also causes a number of preventable diseases, poor health, disability, and environmental costs. In light of the implementation of recommendations contained in the Government approved Tobacco Free Ireland, it is timely to commission a more comprehensive economic analysis of the societal cost of smoking. Such an analysis will allow the Department of Health set a benchmark on these costs and will facilitate the monitoring of the health related economic impact of implementing Tobacco Free Ireland.
