The ‘Instrument for analysis of fat and total solids in milk, cheese and dairy powders, without the requirement of hazardous organic solvents’ should include the following specifications: The equipment should be capable of accurate determination of fat and total solids in milk, cheese and dairy-based products (e.g., yoghurt, milk powder, ice cream etc.). Provide rapid, accurate results on a broad range of dairy products without the use of organic solvents or hazardous materials. Demonstrate an accuracy of measurement that gives close correlation of fat and total solids measurements obtained with the IDF standard methods (based on gravimetric analysis using Rose Gottlieb for fat, and oven drying for moisture) for fat and total solids in milk, cheese, and dairy based products(see IDF Standards: IDF5: 2004). The accuracy and repeatability of the equipment should be highlighted. The equipment dimensions must be such that the equipment is compact and can be used on a typical laboratory bench-top. Calibrations must be provided for the accurate measurement of fat and total solids in milk and cheeses (with fat contents ranging from ~ 1 to 40 %, w/w). Ease of use of both hardware and software for method development and routine analysis Must provide excellent backup and service terms i.e. extended warranties. Provide for installation and training and support of personnel as part of overall package The possibility of using the equipment with a range of other dairy products should be highlighted.
