FILDOC202202 - Tender for the supply and delivery of Portalis – Film Documentary at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT)

WIT has been successful in receiving funding for the Portalis operation from the Ireland Wales 2014-2020 European Territorial Co-operation (ETC) programme. Portalis explores the earliest connection between Ireland and Wales dating back to the Early Mesolithic period, (Middle Stone Age), known for its greater innovation and diversity. We do by employing a Public Archaeology framework to consolidate existing evidence and provide new data. We interpret this data into an exciting cross-border narrative. The narrative is developed into a powerful new visitor experience at two key museums, mapping the story of this first journey in the context of contemporary resilience and climate adaptation, for both local coastal communities and their visitors. We use a range of different techniques including drilled core sampling, excavation, lab analysis, citizen archaeology, visitor experience design including film and virtual reality, App design including a 3D online exhibition and we support engagement and long term sustainability with a 20 month period of intensive stakeholder engagement resulting in the establishment of two new experiential tourism and cultural networks. Both Irish and Welsh communities are invited to join the Portalis team in discovering and protecting shared cultural and natural heritage, contribute to new research exploring the challenges of coastal climate change through Public Archaeology and Citizen Scientist Programmes, and in doing so, help trace the footsteps of potentially the first journey and cultural connection between Wales and Ireland.
