As the largest town in north Cork, Mallow plays a key role in the context of the county and the wider region. In the context of its strategic position within the region and along the Cork-Limerick corridor, it has been identified as a key town in the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy for the Southern Region. It has an extensive hinterland of rural areas and smaller satellite towns for which it acts as the regional services centre and market town. Its role as a market town is particularly important in the context of the vibrant agricultural and food industry that the town supports. In order for a Traffic Model to be developed to inform the design and business case for the project, a series of new traffic surveys are required. The data collection study area extends wider in the North and West than the proposed scheme study area to ensure the capture of rat running and alternative routes taken to avoid congestion.
