Squires Gannon sculpture - 'Squires Gannon' commemorative sculpture commission

It is proposed that Kildare County Council will commission a public art commemorative sculpture in Kildare town, that acknowledges that Kildare was the first County to win the Sam Maguire cup, captained by Bill 'Squires' Gannon. It is envisaged that a 150% life sized bronze sculpture, representing Gannon, will be created and set on a plinth for public display in Kildare Town Kildare was the first County to be awarded the Sam Maguire Trophy in 1928. The team then went on to win again in the subsequent year but the accolade of being recipient of first ever trophy can clearly not be repeated. The Captain of the team was Bill 'Squires' Gannon, a legendary figure in County who has some wonderful folklore to his legacy. The commission should ideally celebrate the Captain, trophy and team and possibly capture some of the key values of modesty, community and hard work that are synonymous with Squires Gannon. (On winning the trophy, he duly came home, left it in the window of the local bakery and went to milk cattle).
