Tender 03/2019 - Archaeological Company/Supplier to Manage Community Based Excavation & Learning Programme

Newry, Mourne & Down District Council on behalf of Down County Museum, is seeking to appoint a competent archaeological company to manage a community-based archaeological excavation and learning programme for young volunteers aged between 16 and 24 from all backgrounds on a site adjacent to Down Cathedral in Downpatrick, as part of the Shared History and Cultural Programme under the Children and Young People theme. This programme is aimed at dispelling myths and perceptions about St Patrick, to provide a practical understanding of archaeological and historical evidence, and how the considered investigation and preservation of our shared past links to our shared future. This is aimed at providing a positive shared experience of learning about the past for young people and using common learning experiences to correct misconceptions and help shape our shared future. The Theme requires participants to be involved for a minimum of 26 hours during the programme of activities. The facilitator will be required to manage, provide or sub-contract resources and activities for participants, and provide actual costs for managing the programme and providing/sub-contracting each element. Down County Museum wishes to undertake a cross-community five-week archaeological excavation on the site of the Old Tennis Courts on Cathedral Hill from Tuesday 30th July to Saturday 31st August 2018, to involve 50 participants aged between 16 and 24. The project will be undertaken by a suitably qualified archaeological company, with detailed experience in undertaking archaeological fieldwork, community-based archaeological projects, and working with young people. The archaeological company must be able to provide a team of four professional archaeologists to undertake this programme of work for the museum.
