Bord Iascaigh Mhara 2019 - Aquaculture Specialist Panels April 2019 - April 2022

Following years of low recruitment of benthic seed mussel settlement, it was decided in 2015 to start a larval monitoring program using local operators to carry out the sampling in various locations mainly on the southeast coast. In addition, a condition index monitoring of the farmed brood stock has been running in Wexford Harbour and Castlemaine Harbour by local mussel farmers for the past three years. The condition index is primordial to assess mussel spawning. A yearly report is produced from the data collected from both program and is then made available to the industry via the ISPP website and the BIM website. Both programs have been successful so far for highlighting the mussel larvae population variation in the vicinity of known seed mussel settlements and the correlation with brood stock condition index variation. Therefore, it is planned to expand the larvae monitoring stations around the coast and look at other bivalve species. In addition, the brood stock condition index survey is planned to be expanded to other locations where mussels are farmed. Services required: To continue delivering information to the industry about larvae population, BIM is now seeking the following services: 1) Plankton sampling 2) Brood stock condition index monitoring Two panels will be put in place for the aforementioned services, and tenders are invited to complete this questionnaire to get placed on either, or both of the panels. The legal basis for the schemes is based on the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund Regulation (508/2014) covering the period 2014-2020. The EMFF is intended to support the new Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and is considered the financial instrument of the CFP.
