SCC2019/005 - Public Bicycle Hire Scheme for Sligo City & Environs

Urban Cycle Sligo is a project led by Sligo County Council, in partnership with the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, and the Active Travel Towns initiative – please visit the dedicated website www.sligoactivetravel.ie for more information which provides the context for the proposed bike share scheme. Bike share schemes have become popular across the globe with over 100 municipalities implementing projects covering a wide and diverse range of communities and user groups. There are a number of schemes operating within the island of Ireland with schemes in Belfast, Dublin and Galway. The topography of Sligo presents particular challenges and consequently any scheme must take recognition of these challenges. In consideration of the above Sligo County Council (SCC) wish to progress with implementing a public bike share scheme within the wider City centre area linking main transport hubs with the commercial, tourism and business districts. A pilot scheme implemented in 2018 demonstrated that there is public demand access to bicycles on a pay as you go basis in Sligo.
