Innovation has been a core principle in the LEADER Programme methodology for over 20 years and is also a cross-cutting theme in the Rural Development Programme. There is now a renewed policy focus and acknowledgement of the importance of Innovation in rural development in assisting rural communities to be active stakeholders in making their communities more sustainable. The paradigm of innovation as driven primarily by technology and science is passé. A new paradigm is emerging, where communities, individuals and customers collaborate and co-create to identify problems and develop more innovative solutions. Individuals and communities are demanding higher levels of public service, while statutory service provision tends to apply a one size fits all. In the future, communities as consumers, not just institutions will need to have a voice in the innovation process. Innovation in rural areas is a key objective of the LEADER programme and a key component of the Local Development Strategy in each of the LAG areas. When this existing need for innovation is added to the imminent challenges of BREXIT for the border area the importance of innovation and building the innovation capacity of the region is intensified. The regions involved have similar characteristics, connections, features and challenges. Through this project, the partners will co-operate in order to realise an economy of scale and an innovative approach that will work to boost the innovation culture of the target region. The project will search out innovative solutions for some specific sector topics using new ways of looking at problems and identifying solutions. From experience, the partners have found out that it is challenging for project promoters to create new innovative solutions with common methods and traditional instruments in rural areas. The Nature of Innovation project will involve a high level of user-orientation and involvement working to bring more diversity, interaction, knowledge pooling and new experiences.
