The EPA is awarding a contract for the organisation of Farm Hazardous Waste Collections in 2017. The actual collection events will be operated by a waste contractor who will be site managers on the day of each collection. The contract being offered here relates to the necessary arrangements to ensure the 10 collection events are efficient and successful. The work is expected to include liaison with EPA and other project partners; and engagement with the waste contractors, site owners & other stakeholders involved in the initiative. The successful tenderer will also be required to update promotional materials and to disseminate same. The actual costs of producing promotional materials and any agreed media expenditure will be borne by the project partners. Farm hazardous waste has the potential to cause harm to farmers, livestock and the environment due to the nature of their properties such as being flammable; carcinogenic; and ecotoxic. The safe disposal of farm hazardous waste is important for every farmer in producing quality assured products for consumers and in supporting the green and smart ambitions of the agri-food sector. In order to address this issue, the EPA developed a pilot scheme to provide farmers with the opportunity to bring hazardous wastes to one-day collection events where it was sorted and transported for safe disposal or recovery by a contracted waste management company. Additional guidance on identifying and categorising agri-chemicals collected is provided at the events through a contracted specialist. Over the course of a 4-year pilot scheme, 6,807 farmers visited 36 collection centres and deposited over 800 tonnes of hazardous waste. It is believed that this represents the largest ever bulk collection of toxic pollutants out of the Irish environment. It is now intended to operate a further year of the collection programme, with a further 10 one-day collection events to be operated.
