FCC/ 73/ 17 (15-004/ PH2) - EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST FOR SWORDS CASTLE CONSERVATION AND NEW-BUILD WORKS - PHASE 2

NOTE: This is Stage 1 - Expression of Interest - of a two-stage tender process. OVERALL The works overall will involve specialised heritage contracting, overseeing a mixture of conservation works and a modern new-build intervention, including new electrical work, on a nationally-important National Monument. CONSERVATION Conservation works comprising complex masonry consolidation, repairs and re-building - on existing stonework on two separate structures at the East Tower and the Chapel. NEW-BUILD/ REFURBISHMENT A modern new-build portion involving the replacement of the extensive existing timber battlement wall-walk and stairs with a new architecturally-designed steel structure on the West and North Wall sections of the historic curtain wall, including the introduction of new wall-walk lighting. A selective upgrade of existing electrical services at the Chapel & Chamber Block and the electrical mains meter & distribution boards in the Knights & Squires Quarters building. GENERAL The works are subject to ministerial consent under the terms of the National Monuments Acts, which is pending on the current application for the works listed in this schedule. Careful demolition of the existing timber wall-walk and stairs will form part of the works. Careful removal of an existing steel shoring on a tall masonry ruin, after consolidation works are completed, will also be required. The works will include archaeological monitoring as they proceed. The works include numerous particular risks including demolitions, scaffolding, working near unstable structures, working at height and in an operational heritage site with public access- the contractor will act as PSCS and active management of site operations and phasing of works will be required. The site is open daily to the public Tuesday - Sunday and a significant number of public events are planned on site in 2017 during July, August, September and October.
