Phytoplankton_OpenProcedure_2017 - The analysis and screening of phytoplankton from transitional and coastal waters to fulfil specific obligations of the EU Water Framework Directive

The Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) requires each member state to classify its waters based on the evaluation of a range of biological, physical and chemical parameters. One of the biological elements to be assessed is phytoplankton which is now being routinely monitored as part of the national WFD monitoring programme for transitional and coastal waters. Information on phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll) and composition (bloom frequency) is used to assess the ecological status of the phytoplankton biological element. This in turn contributes towards the overall ecological assessment of these waters. The EPA is seeking assistance in the analysis of phytoplankton samples collected for this purpose. The specific requirements of this tender are: a) To identify and quantify phytoplankton species in approximately 400 samples following the methodology outlined below. b) To analyse these samples to an appropriate level of taxonomic precision. The level of precision required can be gleaned from the species list derived from samples that have already been analysed by the EPA and attached to this tender as an excel spreadsheet. c) To enter the analysed data into the EPA’s phytoplankton database or compatible database. d) To write a report at the end
