SPU C014-2017 - Calaminarian Grassland Survey 2017-18

Ireland is obliged to undertake surveillance/monitoring of the habitats listed on Annex I of the EU Habitats Directive and to report regularly on their conservation status (Article 17). The assessment of conservation status requires an understanding of the range, area and the structure and functions of Annex I habitats, and an evaluation of the threats and pressures impacting upon them. NPWS invites tenders to undertake a survey of the Annex I habitat Calaminarian grasslands of the Violetalia calaminariae (Natura code 6130). Baseline data are available for all of these from a previous survey carried out in 2008. Detailed site records, including maps, relevés, vegetation classification, species lists and photographs are held at NPWS and will be made available to the successful tenderer. The 2017–2018 survey aims to revisit all 29 Calaminarian grassland sites that were surveyed in 2008, determine the condition of the habitat (including the use of metallophyte bryophytes as indicators) and gather the necessary data required to feed into a National Conservation Status Assessment using the Article 17 parameters: range; area; structure and functions; future prospects. A template Excel spreadsheet, with sample data gathered during a similar exercise for Petrifying Springs, will be provided to the successful tenderer.
