The requirement of the commission is to produce a 15-year Master Plan for all of the NMI’s sites and services which provides a sustainable operational model for the long term future. The “Master planning” process and resultant Master Plan will address how the National Museum of Ireland will deal with major change in defined areas and will set out proposals for buildings, spaces, movement, functional uses and resources and aligns these with a deliverable implementation strategy. The Master Plan for the NMI must set out what we are going to do to deliver what we want to achieve to implement our strategic goals and specific objectives. It must create a clear and concise “road map” and a sustainable long term vision with the flexibility to respond to windows of opportunity. Furthermore, the Master Plan must raise aspirations amongst all stakeholders and, developed through a collaborative process, it must provide a means of facilitating consensus for a future vision of the NMI which is driven by audience needs. The proposed Master Plan must be ambitious and a key focus will be on securing the financial resources – capital and operational – for improving and enhancing the visitor / user offer and experience, collections management and preservation and physical and intellectual accessibility
