CEDR Transnational Road Research Programme: Call 2013

This Call for Proposals entitled CEDR Transnational Road Research Programme Call 2013 is launched by the National Roads Authority (NRA) of Ireland behalf of the Conference of European Directors of Roads (CEDR). The content of this Call for Proposals was developed by CEDR members to fulfil the common interests of various European road administrations. The participating countries are Austria, Belgium (Flanders), Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden and UK. The NRA will take on the role of Programme Manager: this will include organising the Call for Proposals, programme co-ordination, financial governance and general project management. As in previous collaborative research programmes, the participating members will establish a Programme Executive Board (PEB) made up of experts in the topics to be covered: the PEB will act as a steering committee for the programme. The Call for Proposals involves five separate research programmes covering the following topics: A: Ageing infrastructure management B: Traffic management C: Safety D: Energy efficiency E: Roads and wildlife Full details of each of these programmes are provided in the attached Description of Research Needs (DoRNs). CEDR Transnational Road Research Programme: Call 2013: A: Ageing Infrastructure Management

The aim of this research programme is to help road administrations develop a suitable technical and commercial governance structure for the future management of ageing infrastructure. This structure will include a better understanding of maintenance costs and future liabilities and the application of new technology driven condition assessment of road assets in a consistent manner. CEDR Transnational Road Research Programme: Call 2013: C: Safety

Part 1 of this Programme will develop knowledge on Accident Prediction Models, their application on European Motorways and higher ranked rural roads. Part 2 will focus on the definition of Stopping Sight Distance and why it is required. Part 3 will develop a Safety Review tool to collect and assess a number of geometric design elements from the existing alignment and to compare these elements with current design standards. CEDR Transnational Road Research Programme: Call 2013: D: Energy Efficiency

The overall aim of this Transnational Research Programme is to develop concepts and strategies for construction and operation of roads with reduced use of energy. The programme will focus on energy efficient materials and technologies. The solutions must be feasible, valid and cost-effective. CEDR Transnational Road Research Programme: Call 2013: E: Roads and Wildlife

The aim of this research programme is to develop a better understanding of the effectiveness of different environmental mitigation strategies used on road schemes. The research will focus on solving the conflict between wildlife and roads and investigate more cost- efficient methods for building and maintaining structures for reducing the impact on wild life such as fauna passages.
