THE PROVISION OF A TOTE WAGERING SYSTEM
Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) was established by the Irish Government under the Horse and Greyhound Racing Act 2001. It is a commercial semi-state body that took over the functions previously carried out by the Irish Horse Racing Authority and is responsible for the promotion, development and administration of Irish horse racing. HRI subsidiaries include Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Ltd (ITM), Tote Ireland Ltd. and the HRI Racecourse Division.
Tote Ireland Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Horse Racing Ireland, with responsibility for the operation of a Totalisator on the 26 racecourses in the Republic of Ireland. Tote Ireland is at the heart of Irish Horseracing, providing a wide variety of betting options for all race goers. All profits made by Tote Ireland are used for the improvement of Irish Horseracing.
Tote' is short for Totalisator and Tote Betting is similar to the Lotto. All the stakes on a race are pooled; a deduction is made to cover costs and contribution to racing. The remainder of the pool is divided by the number of winning units to give a dividend, which is inclusive of a €1 stake.
