The development and implementation of a Road Management System for Ireland is considered to be a high priority to ensure best practice in managing road expenditure, drive efficiencies and consistency in road licensing and utility permits as well as supporting performance management, oversight and audit. Currently the LGMA are undertaking the implementation and ongoing development of a such a roads related ICT system, MapRoad PMS. The governance and drivers for this project is provided by the local authority sector and the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (DTTAS). The establishment of a Road Management Office (RMO), a shared service initiative for the local government sector will also serve to provide the future development objectives for the system. Furthermore there are a number of key deliverables of this project that are specific deliverables on the Governments 2015 Action Plan for Jobs. MapRoad PMS is an integrated, Geographical Information System (GIS) enabled, Roads Management Information System. It is currently composed of four main elements: (1) a desktop system, (2) a web based interface, (3) a road licensing and control system, and, (4) a number of Android App for surveying/inspections/field work.
