Under the National Archives Act, 1986 all census forms and maps must be stored for a period of 100 years. Under the Statistics Act, 1993, Census of Population records are open to public inspection after 100 years. In order to be usable in 100 years, records require storage to archival standards in relation to physical preservation and intellectual control, which must be maintained over the period. Physical preservation requires high levels of security, unbroken custody, specific packing and storage in appropriate stable environments free from risks. Archival control requires knowledge about the organisation and functioning of the documents and the maintenance of their order. The Central Statistics Office has serious commitment to long term preservation of the Census records. They are widely recognised as a first quality genealogical source, they are the most widely consulted documents being used by the general public and specialists alike. Census records therefore require the highest level of storage available. The Central Statistics Office has a requirement for indexing, transport, archival storage and on demand retrieval of 2011 Census Records and Census 2016 records in 5 years time.
