Bord Na Móna has initiated a programme of rehabilitation of their land holding which is to take place over 82 bogs in a period of 5 years. This work involves reprofiling of fields, the construction of berms and holding ponds over several fields, blocking drains etc with the ultimate aim of creating the environment for ombrotrophic sphagnum growth. The aim is to avoid impacting on material of archaeological significance. After having run a successful pilot in 2021 we intend to commission archaeological monitoring of machine works in a further 21 bogs to verify that indeed the scheme is effective in avoiding known areas of wetland archaeology and any newly identified material which may turn up during the works.
