Dublin City Council wishes to engage in a Market Sounding exercise with interested parties, on the proposed redevelopment of the Fruit and Vegetable Market at St Marys Lane Dublin 7 to provide for an indoor, retail food market for the city. The new Food Market, located in the old Fruit and Vegetable market, just off Capel Street will occupy slightly more than 50% of the 6000Sq meter building. Located in this stately Victorian building, purpose built in 1892 the reimagined market will respect its past and showcase the best of Irish food producers. This will be an exciting vibrant community of food producers, food for now and fresh produce. It will have an ethos of direct linkages between production and consumer, as well as an international element. The building, its operating systems and its market traders will work to strong eco credentials minimising environmental impact and promoting such values. The Council wishes to gather industry views on the feasibility of delivering a retail food market in one-half of the Council owned Victorian building at St Mary’s Lane Dublin 7. The Project would include the financial provision, conservation and upgrade works needed to the building, fit out and associated infrastructure to allow for a food business use in this protected structure. At this point in time the Council considers that a Design, Build Finance and Operation of the market is a possible contracting solution which would be subject to tender. However the Council is open to exploring all other proposals which would meet the Councils aims with respect to the market. The proposals will need to align with the current granted Part 8 Planning Permission in the immediate delivery of the project. This permission sets out the parameters and ethos of what is envisaged for the redeveloped market and also identifies the historic and cultural significance of the building.
