The School of Engineering has been at the heart of Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) since its formation in 1970. There have been over 12000 graduations from the School in the 1973-2016 period and over 8000 apprentices who have completed a significant part of their training in that period in the School; typically Phases 4 and 6 of the 7-Phase route to a national trade’s qualification via SOLAS and the Education and Training Boards (ETBs).
The current education portfolio includes professionally accredited flexible pathways for lifelong learning in a variety of engineering, built environment and architecture disciplines including:
• Electronic and Electrical Engineering;
• Electrical Apprenticeship;
• Electronic Security Systems Apprenticeship;
• Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering;
• Motor Mechanics Apprenticeship;
• Building Services and Sustainable Energy Engineering;
• Sustainable Civil Engineering;
• Plumbing Apprenticeship;
• Construction Management and Quantity Surveying;
• Architecture;
• Architectural & Building Information Modelling (BIM) Technology;
• Applied Conservation Skills.
The overall economic context had a major influence on the number and type of students that participated in our programmes. The downturn in the broad Irish construction sector led to student numbers in associated programmes across the country, not just in WIT, being reduced significantly.
The School re-structure took place in September 2013 and involved reducing the number of Departments from four to three. The Department of Engineering Technology became home to Electrical, Electronic Security Systems and Motor Mechanics while Plumbing moved to the new Department of Built Environment.
The Department of Engineering Technology is the oldest department in Waterford Institute of Technology. The Department currently has 15 education programmes ranging from Apprenticeship up to NFQ Level 9 Masters on the National Framework of Qualifications.
The department has continued to develop apprenticeship programmes and has been allocated funding to update the electronic security equipment in our laboratories and workshops. The upgrade is to facilitate the introduction of the new Version 4.1 of the Electronic Security Systems Apprenticeship.
Kind Regards,
EPS Team
