The Fluorescent in-situ hybridisation (FISH) laboratory in the Histopathology Department at St. James’s Hospital has provided a hospital and national service since the 2010. The service is staffed by two medical scientists. Currently the service offers the following assays for diagnostics and predictive testing: • Her2 gene amplification found in Breast/Gastric/Colorectal Cancer • Gene rearrangement /translocations found in Lymphomas • Alk and ROS1 gene rearrangement found in NSCLC The Fluorescent in-situ hybridisation (FISH) technique is performed as a semi-automated assay, on formalin fixed paraffin embedded material. Future Development Possible introduction of additional esoteric FISH testing for Lymphoma nationally • DUSP22, TP63 rearrangements • 11q aberration. Possible development of Myeloma FISH service.
